Dushyant Kumar Tyagi
Born into a farming family in Western Uttar Pradesh Dushyant witnessed the daily struggles of farmers, which ignited in him a deep-seated passion for agriculture. This passion drove him to pursue a Master’s degree in Agriculture Science with a specialization in Plant Breeding from GB Pant University of Agriculture and Technology. Equipped with this knowledge, Dushyant embarked on a journey that would see him work across the entire agricultural value chain—from agri inputs and post-harvest processing to marketing, retail, and technology-enabled services. Over 30 years, Dushyant held leadership roles at prominent companies such as Zuari Agro Chemicals Ltd., Nagarjuna Fertilizers and Chemicals Limited (NFCL), Mother Dairy Fruit & Vegetable Pvt. Ltd., Aditya Birla Retail Limited, Reliance Retail, and Chambal Fertilisers and Chemicals Limited. These experiences helped him to gain a holistic understanding of the sector, from the challenges of input supply to the intricacies of fresh food retail. His work across these segments armed him with the insights needed to drive change at a larger scale. As the CEO of Farmgate Technologies Pvt Ltd., Dushyant has been instrumental in leading digital transformation in Indian agriculture. One of his most notable contributions has been his role as the Strategic Partner for the National Agriculture Market (e-NAM) initiative—the world’s largest electronic spot trading platform for agricultural commodities. The platform, which has facilitated 125 MMT trade worth $45 billion across 23 states and 4 union territories, has integrated 1,389 mandis and benefitted over 17 crore farmers and 3.5 lakh traders and commission agents. Under Dushyant’s leadership, e-NAM has provided transparent pricing, reduced transaction costs, and enhanced farmers' income prospects, revolutionizing how agricultural trade is conducted in India. He is also credited to lead India’s only farmgate Agri Trading platform eFarmarket connecting farmers directly from their farms to buyers across the country as the strategic partner to the Govt of Andhra Pradesh. Under his mentorship, Nebulaa Innovations has achieved extraordinary success, with its revolutionary Automatic Grain Analyzer, MATT, at the forefront. This AI-powered device delivers precise grain quality assessments in under two minutes, analyzing over 10 million parameters to detect defects. Nebulaa was able to rapidly commercialize MATT, including its adoption by institutions like the Food Corporation of India (FCI), transforming procurement and testing processes. The company’s innovations have earned multiple global patents and prestigious recognition, including selection for Google’s Solve for India Accelerator in 2017 and being featured at Google’s annual event. Most recently, Nebulaa won the Dell Technologies Entrepreneur Challenge in 2024 among 1600 participating startups, showcasing its pioneering role in efficient quality analysis of agricultural commodities. His leadership roles include being the Chairman of the India Digital Agriculture Council (ICFA), Co-Chair of the National Council for Agriculture (ASSOCHAM), and a jury member for the Startup India challenge. He is a recognized speaker at numerous industry events hosted by FICCI, CII, MANAGE, IIMs, and ISB. Dushyant has received several prestigious awards, including the Gems of Digital India 2018, the Platinum Award for e-NAM under Digital India Awards 2022, and the Shriram Award by FAI. He has been featured in leading publications like India Today, Forbes India, Fortune India and NDTV Profit ‘Incredible Brands - Startup Journeys’ for his work in AgriTech and digital transformation. Looking ahead, Dushyant aims to drive further innovation in the Indian agriculture sector. He believes the future of agriculture lies at the intersection of biological sciences and engineering. In a lighter vein, he often says that two things will drive the future of food and agriculture: algorithms and genomics. His vision includes building a robust ecosystem for agritech startups focused on cutting-edge technologies such as gene editing, microbial synthesis, synthetic biology, IoT, and AI-based solutions for resource optimization. He envisions technology-led disruptions in agri-fintech, supply chain, and food distribution systems. By leading these innovations and making early-stage investments in promising startups, he aims to address global challenges like climate change, resource constraints, and sustainability.
